If you haven’t eaten it, don’t flush it!
Clean water never clogged a pipe!

These rules are pretty simple. And possibly a little blunt. But they certainly work!

If you haven’t eaten it, don’t flush it!

Kotex, baby wipes, Kleenex, paper towels, dental floss, hair from your hairbrush.  None of them belong down the drain.  In addition, many things are marketed as “flushable.”  Moist wipes, tampons, disposable toilet cleaners.  “Flushable” means that it will go through your bowl, but it doesn’t mean it is good for your pipes.  Many of these things will get hung up in the pipes, and act as obstructions that stop toilet paper and waste from reaching the city sewer, leading to blockages.

Clean water never clogged a pipe!

Food and grease are the main culprits for kitchen sink clogs.  One of the most common objections to this rule that I hear is “Why do I have a garbage disposal if I’m not supposed to use it?” Simply put, if you want to use your disposal, I can’t stop you.  But pipes weren’t designed for food.  They were designed for water.  The more often food goes down the drain, the more often it will clog.
